How to Use Your AC Efficiently and Save on Electricity Bills This Summer

Jun 03, 2026 • Trikon Editorial

Beat the heat without burning a hole in your wallet. Here is a practical, human-centered guide to optimizing your air conditioner this summer.

We have all been there. The temperature outside is soaring, the air feels like a thick blanket, and the temptation to blast the AC at its lowest possible setting is incredibly high.

But a few weeks later, reality hits. The electricity bill arrives, and suddenly the sweat returns for a completely different reason.

It does not have to be an "either-or" situation. You can absolutely stay cool and comfortable while keeping your energy consumption in check. It just takes a few smart habits and a little bit of strategy.

1. The Magic Number: 24°C (75°F)

When you walk into a hot room, the instinct is to set the AC to 16°C, thinking it will cool the room faster. Spoiler alert: it won't. Your AC works at the same speed regardless of the temperature setting. It just runs longer to reach lower targets.

  • The Sweet Spot: Set your thermostat to 24°C or 25°C.

  • The Savings: Every degree you raise the thermostat can save you roughly 3% to 6% on your cooling costs.

  • The Human Touch: Give your body a few days to adjust to 24°C. You will find it is actually a very comfortable temperature for sitting, working, or relaxing.

2. Team Up with Your Ceiling Fan

Your ceiling fan is your AC’s best friend. While fans do not actually cool the air, they move it across your skin, creating a wind-chill effect that makes the room feel about two degrees cooler than it actually is.

Pro Tip: Turn on the fan and set your AC to 25°C. You will get the comfort of a 23°C room while paying the electricity price of a 25°C room. Just remember to turn the fan off when you leave the room. Fans cool people, not spaces.

3. Keep the Monster Outside (Block the Sun)

Your AC is constantly fighting a battle against the heat bleeding into your home through windows and walls. If you leave your curtains wide open during the peak afternoon sun, you are making your AC work twice as hard.

  • Close the Blinds: Use heavy or reflective curtains during the hottest parts of the day.

  • Seal the Leaks: Check the gaps under your doors and around window frames. Cool air escapes remarkably fast through tiny cracks, which forces your AC into overdrive.

4. The 10-Minute Maintenance Hack

When was the last time you cleaned your AC filters? If you have to pause and think about it, it has been too long.

A clogged, dusty filter restricts airflow. This means your unit has to consume significantly more energy just to push cool air into the room.

  • The Routine: Pop open the front panel of your AC every two weeks, slide the mesh filters out, and rinse them under a tap.

  • The Benefit: This simple, cost-free chore can lower your AC's energy consumption by up to 15% and noticeably improve the air quality in your home.

5. Use "Eco" or "Sleep" Mode at Night

You do not need the same level of intense cooling when you are asleep as you do when you are active during the day.

Most modern air conditioners come equipped with a Sleep Mode or Eco Mode. When activated, the unit will gradually raise the temperature by one or two degrees over a few hours. You won't notice the difference while sleeping, but your electricity meter certainly will.

Small Changes, Big Relief

Efficient AC usage is not about suffering through the heat. It is about being intentional. By tweaking your habits, keeping up with basic cleaning, and letting your fans do some of the heavy lifting, you can enjoy a perfectly chilled summer without the financial dread.

Stay cool, stay smart, and keep those bills down!
